2017

  • At the end of 2017, dockless bikes accounted for about 44% of the total bike share market in the U.S., but the bikes only accounted for about 4% of the bike share rides. With 35 million trips taken in 2017, that means 1.4 million were on dockless bikes (35 million*.04).
  • There were approximately 44,000 dockless bikes at the end of 2017.
  • There were five major companies in the dockless bikeshare space at the end of 2017: Jump (formerly Social Bicycles), Limebike, MoBike, Ofo, and Spin.
  • BlueGoGo was the first company to introduce dockless bike sharing in the U.S. but they declared bankruptcy in 2017.
  • There were dockless bike systems in several states in 2017, including Washington, California, Texas, Florida, and North Carolina.

2018

  • There were approximately 3 million trips taken on dockless pedal bikes in 2018 and 6 million on dockless ebikes. However, dockless bikes have mostly disappeared from the U.S. compared to their growth in 2017.
  • A map published by the National Association of City Transportation Officials, shows Washington state as the only location with dockless bikes only in the U.S.
  • Dockless e-scooters grew in popularity which contributed to the decline of dockless bikes.
  • Lime and Spin changed their focus from dockless bikes to dockless e-scooters
