French Banking Industry

Goals

To provide the market share of key players in the small business banking segment in France and determine any key regulatory constraints/factors that impact the major French banks business model in relation to small business banking.  To list the key incumbent players, their market share over time, revenue model, and total revenue breakdown including commercial banking in the small business segment.

Early Findings

Top Commercial LendersAccording to S&P Global's May 2019 report, the household debt market in France is concentrated among 6 banking groups: Crédit Mutuel, Crédit Agricole, BPCE, Société Générale, BNP Paribas, and La Banque Postale.
The Fédération Bancaire Française (FBF) reported that loans to households and companies in France amounted to €2,089 billion.
Of these, around half was loaned to households (€1,055 billion) and half to businesses (€1,034 billion).
Export.gov also names Crédit Agricole - LCL, BPCE (Banque Populaire Caisse d'Épargne), Société Générale, BNP Paribas, Natixis, Crédit Mutuel - CIC and HSBC France as the largest commercial banks in France. 
France SME Lending MarketFBF reported that €374 billion in loans were granted to 1.08 million small and medium enterprises in France.
 61% of all business loans were funded by banks while 39% were granted through market funding in 2015.
FBF reported in September 2019 that SME loans made up 42% of all business loans in April 2019.
Crédit MutuelCrédit Mutuel reported that 4 commercial financial services brands under its COFIDIS
 Participations Group business line had a collective €13.8 billion balance sheet.
It also reported c. 8.900.000
 customers across all markets including France and over 4.100 million
 financing transactions.
Crédit Mutuel stated that it was the #1 French bank and the 5th largest commercial bank in the euro zone in 2018.
