Research Outline

Music Artists

Goals

To assist with developing both a blog post and a business presentation, obtain data on the top 100 musical artists of 2018 based on touring revenue and the top 100 musical artists of 2018 based on the number of global music streams. For both lists, include data on touring revenue, number of tickets sold, and the number of global music streams.

Early Findings

  • Pollstar published a list of the top 100 artists based on touring revenue for 2018. We began transferring this data to a spreadsheet so data on global streaming could also be added. However, finding total streaming data (spotify, apple music, etc) proved to be difficult.
  • Our initial thought was to only use data from the largest music streaming service as a proxy for including all services. An article from Forbes indicated that the top music streaming services by the number of users are YouTube, NetEase, SoundCloud, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Pandora, Gaana, Apple Music, Anghami, and Deexer (in that order). If we eliminate YouTube because it is more video than music, the top three services are NetEase (China based), SoundCloud, and Spotify.
  • The data for these services may be available individually, although we were not able to confirm that in our initial research.
