Coffee: GHG Contribution


To determeine how much methane in Co2 equivalent is produced by rotting cascara each year. To determine how that compares to other sources of greenhouse gas in order to tell a sustainable story about a product that uses upcycled cascara.

Early Findings


  • The coffee production process produces GHG.
  • Every sector should determine how to mitigate the impact of these GHGs.
  • One such incentive is using carbon credits. One carbon credit is equal to one tonne of carbon equivalents.
  • Carbon trading help mitigate the impacts of carbon emissions.
  • Agricultural practices contribute to the GHG problem. Coffee production is one of them.
  • Climate change has heavily affected coffee production.


  • On average, the amount of GHG produced by coffee production is 1.20 kg of CO2e per kg.
  • Fertilizers produce 96% of GHG; Herbicides, organic fertilizer, and agricultural share the rest.

Summary of our Early Findings Relevant to the Goals

Our first hour of research confirmed that there is publicly available information about coffee production's carbon footprint.
